Google Business Profile: the free thing most local businesses get wrong

For any business serving a local area, the map results sit above the normal search listings and take a large share of the clicks. Appearing there is free. A surprising number of businesses either have no profile or have one they set up once and never touched again.

Claim and verify it first

Search your business name on Google. If a profile exists that you do not control, claim it — auto-generated profiles are common. Verification is usually by postcard, phone or video. Nothing else in this article works until this is done.

Choose the right primary category

This is the single most impactful field and people rush it. Your primary category strongly influences which searches you appear for. Be specific: Web Designer rather than Internet Marketing Service, if that is what you are. Add secondary categories for genuine additional services, but do not pad the list with things you barely do.

Service-area businesses: hide your address

If you work from home or visit customers rather than receiving them, set yourself up as a service-area business and hide the street address. Listing a home address you do not trade from causes problems, and Google is reasonably good at detecting addresses that do not match reality. Set the areas you genuinely cover instead.

Reviews are the ranking lever

Review quantity, recency and response rate all matter. A steady trickle beats a burst — twenty reviews arriving in one week looks exactly like what it is. Ask customers at the point they are happiest, make it easy with a direct link, and reply to every review including the negative ones. Replies are visible to prospects, and a measured response to criticism reads better than no response.

Keep it alive

  • Post occasionally — completed work, a service you want to promote.
  • Add real photos, updated periodically. Profiles with recent photos perform better.
  • Answer the Q&A section, including asking and answering common questions yourself.
  • Keep hours accurate, especially around holidays.

Consistency across the web

Your business name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere they appear — your website, directories, social profiles. Inconsistency dilutes the signal that these all refer to the same business. This is dull work and it genuinely helps.

What it will not fix

A Business Profile helps you appear for local searches near you. It will not make your website rank for national terms, and it is not a substitute for having pages that answer what people search for. It is the highest-return hour of free work available to a local business — but it is one part of the picture.
