Why isn't my website ranking on Google?

This is the single most common question we get, and the answer is rarely the one people expect. A redesign almost never fixes it. Here is how to work out what is actually wrong.

First: is Google even indexing you?

Search Google for site:yourdomain.co.uk. That shows every page Google has indexed. If nothing comes back, nothing else in this article matters — you have an indexing problem, not a ranking problem. If only your homepage comes back, you have the problem described in the next section.

The most common cause: you only have one page

A single page can rank for roughly one thing. If your entire site is a one-pager with anchor links, Google has exactly one URL to work with, and you are competing against businesses with thirty or forty indexed pages each targeting a specific search. This is by far the most frequent reason a decent-looking site gets no traffic, and it is invisible to the owner because the site looks complete.

You are targeting terms you cannot win

Ranking for web design is not realistically achievable for a small business — you are up against national agencies with thousands of backlinks. Web design in Rugby is winnable. The more specific the search, the lower the competition and the higher the intent of whoever is searching. Long, specific terms convert better anyway.

You have no backlinks

Google treats links from other sites as votes of confidence. A new site with no inbound links has nothing signalling that it is credible. This is unglamorous work — ask clients to credit you, get listed in genuine local directories, join your chamber of commerce. Do not buy links; that is a good way to earn a penalty rather than a ranking.

Your site is slow

Page speed is a ranking factor, and it matters more on mobile. If your site takes five seconds to load, a good proportion of visitors leave before seeing it, and Google notices that too. Run PageSpeed Insights. If you are scoring under 50 on mobile, that is worth fixing — usually it is oversized images and a page builder generating bloated markup.

You have no Google Business Profile

For anything local, the map pack sits above the normal results. If you do not have a verified Business Profile, you are invisible in the part of the page that gets the most clicks. It is free and takes twenty minutes.

Your content does not answer anything

Pages that say we are passionate about delivering quality solutions give Google nothing to match a search against. Pages that answer a specific question — what something costs, how long it takes, which option suits which situation — match real searches. Write what someone would actually type.

You are being impatient

New pages typically take two to six weeks to index and start ranking, and competitive terms take months of accumulated signals. If you published last week, nothing has gone wrong yet.

The diagnostic order

  • Check site:yourdomain.co.uk — are you indexed at all?
  • Count your indexed pages. Fewer than five is your problem.
  • Set up Search Console if you have not. It tells you what you actually rank for.
  • Claim your Google Business Profile.
  • Run PageSpeed Insights on mobile.
  • Only then consider whether the design is holding you back. It usually is not.

The uncomfortable summary is that most sites with no traffic do not need to look better. They need more pages, targeting more specific searches, with some evidence that other sites consider them credible.
